Why It Is Difficult
Most external differences between male and female Discus are subtle and variable. Body shape, forehead profile, fin shape, and behavior can suggest sex but are not perfectly reliable.
Behavioral Clues
Courtship, territory defense, surface cleaning, and pair formation can provide clues, but two fish interacting closely does not automatically prove they are a male-female pair.
Breeding Tubes
Sex is often easier to assess when mature fish are actively spawning and the breeding tubes can be observed.
Pairs vs Proven Pairs
A bonded pair and a proven breeding pair are not the same thing. A proven pair has successfully produced viable offspring, which provides much stronger evidence.
Ask Before Buying
If sex or breeding status matters to a purchase, rely on the specific listing and seller's stated level of certainty rather than general visual rules.
