How Many Discus Should You Keep?

Discus naturally interact in groups, and group dynamics can help distribute attention among fish. Small groups can sometimes concentrate aggression on one individual.

The appropriate group depends on aquarium size, fish size, filtration, maintenance, aquascape, and whether established pairs become territorial.

A group of small juveniles can look lightly stocked at first. Plan the aquarium around their eventual size and increased bioload.

Observe feeding access, hiding, dark coloration, persistent chasing, and weight. A fish that is repeatedly excluded may require intervention.

A bonded or breeding pair has different space and social considerations from a juvenile grow-out group or community display.
