Stability Comes First
Discus benefit from clean, stable water. Chasing a precise pH number with frequent chemical adjustments can be more stressful than maintaining a consistent, suitable environment.
Temperature
Discus are warm-water fish. Choose tankmates and plants that can thrive at the same elevated temperatures rather than compromising the Discus environment.
Ammonia, Nitrite & Nitrate
A mature biofilter should keep ammonia and nitrite at zero. Nitrate should be controlled through stocking, feeding, filtration, and regular water changes.
pH & Hardness
Different strains and sources may be accustomed to different mineral content. Learn the water your fish are coming from and make gradual changes rather than abrupt ones.
Testing Routine
Use reliable tests and watch trends. Consistent records can reveal a developing problem before fish behavior changes dramatically.
