Discus compatibility guide

Best Tankmates for Discus

Choose tankmates around warm water, peaceful behavior, adult size, feeding competition, and the needs of the Discus themselves.

01

Start With Discus Needs

Discus are warm-water cichlids that benefit from stable, clean conditions and relatively calm tankmates. Compatibility should be judged by temperature, behavior, feeding style, adult size, and available space.

02

Good Compatibility Traits

Look for peaceful fish that tolerate similar temperatures, do not constantly outcompete Discus at feeding time, and are unlikely to nip fins or harass slower fish.

03

Tankmates That Need Caution

Large, territorial, highly active, fin-nipping, or cool-water species can create problems even if they are sometimes listed as compatible online. Individual behavior matters.

04

Plecos & Bottom Dwellers

Some plecos can work in appropriately sized Discus aquariums, but species selection matters. Research adult size, diet, temperature range, and behavior rather than treating all plecos as interchangeable.

05

Observe the Community

Have a plan to separate incompatible fish. Compatibility is never guaranteed simply because two species share overlapping water parameters.
