Think Beyond Gallons
Tank volume matters, but footprint, height, swimming room, filtration capacity, and stocking density matter too. Discus are tall-bodied fish that need room to turn, feed, and interact naturally.
Groups Need Space
Discus are social cichlids. Keeping a group can distribute social pressure, but every additional fish also increases bioload and space requirements.
Juveniles Grow
Do not size the aquarium only for the fish at purchase size. Plan for adult dimensions and the maintenance demands of a growing group.
Filtration & Water Changes
More filtration does not make an undersized aquarium ideal. Filtration, water changes, feeding, and stocking density work together.
When Bigger Helps
A larger, properly maintained aquarium usually gives the keeper more water-volume stability and more options for aquascaping and compatible tankmates.
