Discus strain names are not governed by one universal naming authority. Breeders, exporters, and retailers may use different names for similar-looking fish.
Color & Pattern
Modern strains can emphasize solid colors, turquoise patterning, spots, bars, face markings, or combinations developed through selective breeding.
Juvenile Color Changes
Young fish may develop additional color and pattern as they mature. Lighting, background, diet, mood, and photography can also affect appearance.
Choose the Fish, Not Just the Name
When buying a specific variety, evaluate the actual fish or representative stock, source quality, health, and expected adult appearance rather than relying only on a strain label.
Building a Collection
