Discus Anatomy & Health Visual Guide
Learn what to observe before assuming a discus is sick.
Eyes & posture
Look for symmetry, alert tracking and normal orientation. Persistent head-down posture, loss of balance or severe darkening deserves investigation.
Gills & breathing
Compare both gill covers and breathing rate. Rapid breathing can reflect oxygen, temperature, ammonia/nitrite, gill irritation or disease.
Fins & body
Clamped fins, wounds, erosions, swelling or marked loss of body mass are useful observations—not diagnoses by themselves.
Skin & slime coat
Watch for excess mucus, lesions, flashing or abnormal surface appearance while also checking water quality and recent handling.
Feces & appetite
Record whether fish are eating and what feces actually look like. One unusual stool is less meaningful than a persistent pattern plus other signs.
Behavior
Hiding, isolation, aggression, surface-gasping and loss of normal social behavior can be early warning signs. Context matters.
