Discus Breeding Fundamentals
Pair formation
Pairs usually form from a maturing group. Courtship can include surface cleaning, territorial behavior and synchronized passes.
Breeding setup
A dedicated mature aquarium with stable warm water, gentle dependable filtration and a clean vertical spawning surface makes observation easier.
Spawn to Fry
| Eggs | Parents deposit and fertilize eggs; prioritize stability and low disturbance. |
|---|---|
| Wrigglers | Larvae remain attached while yolk is used; watch parental care and water quality. |
| Free swimming | Fry begin moving to the parents and feeding from skin mucus. |
| Supplemental feeding | Introduce appropriately sized foods while controlling waste aggressively. |
| Grow-out | Separate at an appropriate stage and maintain excellent water quality and space. |
Important realities
- Sex cannot always be determined reliably from appearance alone.
- First spawns often fail and inexperienced pairs may eat eggs or fry.
- Water chemistry used by successful breeders varies; stability and cleanliness matter more than one universal pH target.
- Raising a large spawn requires substantial food, grow-out space and water-change capacity.
