Before You Buy Discus
A readiness guide for first-time discus keepers.
Aquarium first
Cycle and stabilize the aquarium before buying fish. Know actual gallons, dimensions, filtration and temperature—not just the tank model name.
Plan a social group
Discus are social cichlids. Avoid building a plan around a lone juvenile; use the stocking tools to match group plans to the aquarium.
Warm-water compatibility
Choose tankmates and plants that genuinely tolerate the long-term temperature used for discus.
Maintenance capacity
Be realistic about feeding and water changes. Juvenile grow-out can demand substantially more maintenance than an adult display.
Food ready before arrival
Have appropriate staple and supplemental foods on hand so arrival day is not the time to improvise nutrition.
Quarantine & backup plan
Have a quarantine option and a way to separate aggression or a struggling fish. Preparation is part of responsible stocking.
